Summer Suite

Summer Suite
presented annually since 2019 by numerous Queens-based organizations including Queensboro Dance Festival, Queens Theatre, Queens Night Market, and Little Manila Queens.

Summer Suite is an annual, upbeat, joy-filled street jazz and hip-hop dance medley set to global pop music in multiple languages including Arabic, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tagalog, reflective of our dancers. As the summer progresses, the suite rotates up to 15 dancers and up to six dance routines.

In addition to street jazz, hip-hop and contemporary dance, Summer Suite also includes choreography inspired by Latin styles, Indian Garba, and Filipino Folk. Oftentimes in Eurocentric institutions, the label of ethnic or folk dance is unfairly given to everything that is neither ballet nor modern dance.

The goal of Summer Suite is to show that the modern American style of street jazz and hip hop dance exists without borders and the music is just as hype as American pop and hip hop music.

Public Dance Classes

By providing free dance classes, we hope that participants will feel the positive impacts of dance including the physical benefits of exercise, but they will also experience how dance brings joy, expression, creativity, and healing. Dance is an essential and natural form of health and wellness that has the potential to bring people to a euphoric place.

Summer Suite was made possible (in part) by the Queens Council on the Arts with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council (2021, 2022) and City Artists Corps (2021).
