Summer Suite
Gotham Dance Theater’s annual Summer Suite is a high-energy performance series blending street jazz, contemporary, and hip-hop, set to global music that reflects our diverse company and resonates with our Queens audiences. Each year, the series also includes free community dance classes, reinforcing our mission to make dance accessible, inclusive, and culturally rooted.
Each iteration builds on previous themes that highlight diasporic and personal narratives. Summer Suite 7.0: Over the Rainbow (2025) expanded our multicultural lens by uplifting LGBTQ+ experiences across cultures. Summer Suite 6.0: Halo-Halo (2024) explored the Filipinx-American diaspora through the symbolism of its namesake dessert, blending Native Filipinx, Southeast Asian, and colonial influences. Summer Suite 5.0: World-bound 7 Train (2023) guided audiences through culturally rich Queens neighborhoods along the 7 train.
Since 2019, Summer Suite has been presented by Queens-based organizations including the U.S. Open, Queensboro Dance Festival, Queens Pride, Queens Theatre, Little Manila Queens, Sunnyside Shines BID, the Offices of the Queens Borough President and Queens District Attorney. Beyond Queens, presenters include Perelman PAC, The Tank NYC, The University Settlement, The Center at West Park, Mark Morris Dance Center.
Public Dance Classes
This link opens with a one-minute highlight reel showcasing our free public classes, followed by footage of a full Filipino line dance class taught by Marc Nuñez (2024), and presented, in part, by Queensboro Dance Festival.
These classes are led by Gotham Dance Theater Teaching Artists and feature various styles including basic jazz, house and hip-hop footwork, waacking, salsa, Bollywood, and Filipino line dancing.
Our goal in offering free dance classes is to help participants experience both the physical benefits of movement and the joy, creativity, healing, and community that dance provides. We view dance as an essential form of wellness with the power to bring people to a truly uplifting place.
